Apelles symbolicus, exhibens seriem amplissimam symbolorum, poetisque, oratoribus ac verbi dei praedicatoribus conceptus subministrans varios
A Latin emblem handbook compiled by Joannes Michael von der Ketten and printed in Amsterdam by the Janssonio-Waesbergios firm in 1699, supplying ready-made symbolic images and mottoes to preachers, poets and orators. The small square copperplate engravings set one or two figures in open landscape or draped interiors, with dice on the ground, windmills, burning siege works and a horseman at a city gate, drawn in fine parallel hatching that leaves broad pale skies; useful for figure vignettes, ruled-line shading and compact emblem frames.
