Apologie pour tous les grands hommes qui ont este accusez de magie
A 1669 Paris edition, printed by François Eschart, of Gabriel Naudé's defense of learned men — from Albertus Magnus to Roger Bacon — accused of sorcery, written by the French physician and librarian for a readership of scholars and skeptics. The two images are a heavy black woodcut ornament of a heart formed from scrolling vines, leaves and a tulip-like blossom, and a close view of a densely set letterpress text page with running head and catchword, useful as a printer's flower, a text-block texture, or a source for curling foliate line work.
