Apologie povr tovs les grands personnages qui ont esté faussement soupçonnez de magie
Gabriel Naudé's defence of famous men falsely accused of magic, printed in Paris by François Targa in 1625 for a learned Latin-reading public. The index holds sixteen woodcut initials: capitals set in square blocks among curling acanthus, tulips and pomegranates, with a bare-breasted siren, leafy masks and dolphin-tailed grotesques, useful as drop caps, borders or spot ornaments.
