Architecture and democracy
Claude Bragdon, a Rochester architect and writer on geometry and theosophy, collected these wartime essays on building, ornament and the machine for Knopf in New York in 1918, addressing architects and general readers. The plates are black-and-white line and solid-black diagrams of ornament generated from grids, magic squares, coffered panels, spiral interlace and polygons folded out of four-dimensional figures — flat, high-contrast modules that tile, scale and invert cleanly for pattern work, endpapers and monograms.
