Arrows of the chace; being a collection of scattered letters published chiefly in the daily newspapers,--1840-1880

Ruskin, John, 1819-1900, Wedderburn, Alexander Dundas Ogilvy, 1854- · 1881 · N.Y. Wiley · 7 pictures

A two-volume gathering of John Ruskin's letters to the daily press between 1840 and 1880, edited by Alexander Wedderburn and issued in New York by Wiley in 1881 for readers following his arguments on Turner, Pre-Raphaelite painting, architecture and social reform. The plates here survive as soft, heavily grained tonal fragments of engraved landscape and stonework, alongside the University of California ex libris with its open book, scroll and lettered border, offering texture fills, worn halftone grounds and a ready bookplate frame.
