Art and artists of our time
Clarence Cook's survey of nineteenth-century painting, issued in New York by S. Hess in 1888 for American collectors and general readers following the salons. The 234 plates are soft-toned photogravure and halftone reproductions of contemporary canvases—seated women in long gowns, peasants at work in fields, tavern and cottage genre scenes—useful for grey tonal grounds, period costume, and framed figure groups.
