Art and democracy
A 1910 essay by the English critic Dixon Scott on painting, society and democratic taste, published in London by Adam and Charles Black for general readers and gallery-goers. The plates are halftone reproductions of British portraits of women from the Reynolds and Romney era, in rectangular, oval and circular frames, with soft grey tonal ranges and dark backgrounds that suit vignetting, cut-outs and frontispiece use.
