Arte magica dileguata
Scipione Maffei's 1749 polemic against witchcraft belief, printed by Agostino Carattoni in Verona and addressed to learned readers debating Girolamo Tartarotti. The woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and initials supply symmetrical rococo scrollwork, swagged drapery with tassels, radiant sunbursts, masks and grotesque heads in coarse black line — ready-made banners, dividers and ornamental cartouches for page furniture.
