Arte magica dileguata
A short polemical tract by the Veronese scholar Scipione Maffei arguing against belief in magic, printed in Verona by Agostino Carattoni in 1749 for learned readers following his dispute with Girolamo Tartarotti. The printed decoration is rococo: symmetrical woodcut headpieces of C-scrolls, shells and acanthus framing flower baskets, urns, masks and a draped canopy, plus a later Boston Public Library bookplate with laurel wreath and seal, useful as scroll borders, ornamental rules and cartouche frames.
