Art in America : a critical and historical sketch
A survey of American painting, sculpture, and architecture written by S. G. W. Benjamin and published by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1880 for general readers following the rise of a national school. The 105 plates are wood engravings after paintings, mostly landscapes worked in dense cross-hatching: gnarled oaks over open fields, shaded pools with bathers, cypress rows beside a wayside shrine, woodland streams under heavy foliage, giving designers tonal tree masses, water reflections, and small staffage figures.
