Art in America : a critical and historical sketch
S. G. W. Benjamin's critical and historical survey of American painting, sculpture and architecture, issued by Harper in New York in 1880 for general readers and students of the young national art scene. The plates are wood engravings after paintings and statues — half-length portraits, crowded figure groups, portrait busts and heavily carved Renaissance-style frames — usable as tonal engraved textures, oval medallion heads and ornamental border panels.
