Artistic Japan : illustrations and essays
A periodical of essays and plates on Japanese art issued by the Paris dealer Siegfried Bing and published in London for European collectors, craftsmen and designers of the late 1880s. Plates reproduce ukiyo-e figure prints, Hokusai's manga sketches of contorted laborers and wrestlers, stencil and textile repeats, and color-blocked designs of waves, foliage and animals, giving flat pattern fields, confident brush outlines and asymmetric croppings.
