An artist's letters from Japan
Travel letters by the American painter John La Farge recounting his 1886 journey through Japan, published by the Century Co. in New York in 1897 for readers following the period's interest in Japanese art. The plates are dark halftones after his wash drawings and photographs: shrine gates and carved temple interiors half-lost in cryptomeria shade, terraced gardens, misty coastal hills, with heavy blacks and a narrow grey scale useful for atmospheric silhouettes and textured foliage masses.
