The art of decoration
A Victorian household manual on interior decoration and furniture by Mary Eliza Haweis, published in London by Chatto and Windus in 1881 for middle-class readers furnishing their own homes. Wood-engraved figures show dated specimens in outline: a carved sixteenth-century cabinet, a turned seventeenth-century chair, terracotta ornament, and grotesque beast-head brackets, useful as period furniture profiles and carved detail motifs.
