The art of making devises : treating of hieroglyphicks, symboles, emblemes, aenigma's, sentences, parables, reverses of medalls, armes, blazons, cimiers, cyphres and rebus
Thomas Blount's 1646 London translation of Henry Estienne's French treatise on imprese, printed for courtiers, heralds and writers who had to invent mottoes, emblems and coats of arms. The plates reproduce Roman medals in paired circles, each an obverse profile of an emperor facing a reverse figure, ringed by lettered legends in fine outline engraving; useful for coin roundels, laureate profile heads, standing personifications and curved capital lettering.
