The art of painting in the nineteenth century
A survey of nineteenth-century European painting written by Edmund von Mach and published by Ginn and Co. in Boston and London in 1908 as a classroom and general-reader text. The plates are tinted halftone reproductions of paintings, mostly sepia and grey, showing peasants in fields, cattle and flocks, and low horizons under heavy sky, usable as soft-edged tonal backgrounds and silhouetted figure groups.
