The art of painting in the nineteenth century
A survey of nineteenth-century painting written by Edmund von Mach and published by Ginn and Company in Boston and London in 1908 as a classroom and general-reader history. The plates are monochrome halftone reproductions of paintings — wooded river landscapes, a tavern-yard scene with horses, a lamplit peasant interior at a deathbed — printed soft and grainy with artist and title set in small caps beneath, useful for muted tonal backgrounds, figure groups, and period caption typography.
