The arts in early England
A multi-volume scholarly survey of Anglo-Saxon and early medieval English art and architecture written by Edinburgh art historian G. Baldwin Brown and published by John Murray in London from 1903, aimed at archaeologists, antiquarians and students of Celtic and Runic ornament. The plates are numbered photographic groupings of excavated metalwork and grave goods laid out on dark grounds — saucer and square-headed brooches, gold pendants, glass and amber beads, cremation urns, openwork discs — giving designers silhouettes of interlace, cruciform and rosette ornament plus ready-made specimen-board compositions.
