The Astronomical journal

Dudley Observatory, American Astronomical Society, American Institute of Physics · 1849 · New York [etc.] American Institute of Physics [etc.] · 14 pictures

A professional astronomy research periodical begun in 1849 under the Dudley Observatory and later the American Astronomical Society and American Institute of Physics, printed in New York for working astronomers and observatory staff. The plates are spare black line work on cream stock: zigzag data curves over ruled grids, fans of dated radiating vectors, nested circles labelled with italic letters, and grids of small looping ellipses tracing polar motion taken for chart scaffolding, tick-and-label typography, and abstract linear pattern.
