Joseph Jérôme Le Français de Lalande's Astronomie, a multi-volume technical treatise issued in Paris in 1771 for astronomers, surveyors and students, in a copy from John Adams's library. The engraved plate combines a numbered eclipse map showing the shadow path of 24 June 1778 across the Atlantic and Americas with a grid of fine-lined geometric figures—circles, ellipses, tangents and lettered construction points—usable as diagram ornament or scientific line art.
