An introductory astronomy textbook by Robert Stawell Ball, published by Henry Holt in New York in 1878 for students and general readers. The figures are spare line diagrams printed on toned paper with type showing through: circles standing for earth and atmosphere, lettered points, tangent lines and dashed rays for refraction, parallax and sightlines to stars, usable as geometric marks, ray patterns and lettered schematics.
