Astronomy
A school and college astronomy textbook by Simon Newcomb, issued by Henry Holt in New York in 1883 for students working through positional astronomy, optics and celestial mechanics. The plates are white-line wood engravings reversed out of solid black blocks: lettered ray diagrams, orbital paths, a graduated compass circle with azimuth degrees, and a star chart crossed by proper-motion arrows, giving designers ready-made negative-space line work, arrowheads and labelled geometry.
