Athletics and manly sport
Athletics and Manly Sport is a collection of sporting essays by the Boston editor and poet John Boyle O'Reilly, issued in 1890 by the Pilot Publishing Company for American readers interested in boxing, canoeing and outdoor games. The plates mix isolated wood-engraved equipment studies, such as paddle blades rendered in close hatching, with small captioned landscape vignettes of canals and swamp rivers whose titles are engraved into the picture area, giving designers ready-made silhouetted objects and framed scenic headpieces.
