An 1861 instructional handbook of games and physical exercises for boys, written by the English popular-science author John George Wood and issued in London and New York by Routledge, Warne, and Routledge. The wood-engraved figures show single fencers and paired opponents in lunge, guard, and parry positions, drawn in open outline with hatched shading for clothing and short stroke marks for ground shadow, giving designers isolated action poses on blank backgrounds.
