Argonauts of the western Pacific : an account of native enterprise and adventure in the archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea
Bronislaw Malinowski's 1922 ethnographic monograph on Kula exchange in the Trobriand Islands, published in London and New York for anthropologists and students of Melanesian trade, magic and folklore. The plates are the author's own field halftones: outrigger canoes under construction and under sail, thatched village streets and yam storehouses, groups of men posed on beaches with shell valuables, useful for coastal palm silhouettes, lashed-pole rigging, and grainy documentary tonality.
