The origin of man and of his superstitions

Read, Carveth, 1848- · 1920 · Cambridge : Cambridge U.P. · 1 picture

A 1920 Cambridge University Press treatise by the English psychologist Carveth Read arguing for human descent and the animal roots of magic, totemism and omens, written for anthropologists and psychologists. Its single plate is a hand-lettered branching diagram of the primate stem splitting into great anthropoids and Hominidae, ruled across horizontal strata with a stated scale — useful as a specimen of drawn scientific notation and cursive labelling.
