Apologie pour les grands hommes soupçonnez de magie
Gabriel Naudé's defence of learned men accused of sorcery, issued at Amsterdam by Pierre Humbert in 1712 for a scholarly reading public, and held by the Wellcome Library. The two images are typographic woodcut headbands printed above section titles: one a dense band of flowers and curling foliage, the other a symmetrical grotesque with a central urn, scrolls and paired beasts, useful as rules, dividers and title ornaments.
