Lettres cabalistiques, ou correspondance philosophique, historique et critique, entre deux cabalistes, divers esprits elementaires, & le Seigneur Astaroth
An eight-volume French epistolary satire on occultism and current affairs by Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, marquis d'Argens, issued at The Hague by Pierre Paupie in 1741 for Enlightenment readers of clandestine philosophical correspondence. The plate seen here is a numbered letter-heading vignette engraved by Jakob van der Schley in 1740: two men in tricornes and long coats talking before a colonnaded palace, set inside a scrolling shell-and-leaf cartouche with radiating hatched lines, useful as a frame, header device, or period costume reference.
