A French satirical epistolary work of 1741 by the Marquis d'Argens, printed at The Hague by Pierre Paupie, in which cabalists and elemental spirits exchange letters on magic, religion and current affairs for an educated reading public. Jacob van der Schley's small signed vignettes set numbered letter scenes inside rococo scrollwork cartouches, giving designers frames, panelled interiors, and figures of spirits hovering over startled sitters.
