The baptistery, or, The way of eternal life
An emblem-book devotional poem by Isaac Williams, printed at Oxford by J.H. Parker in 1846 for Tractarian Anglican readers, illustrated with outline re-engravings of Boëtius à Bolswert's early seventeenth-century Dutch pilgrimage plates. The forty plates are sparse line engravings in which a robed pilgrim soul, a winged guardian, small squatting demons and crowds of angels are set in landscapes and courtyards, each figure tagged with a small reference letter — useful for cut-out figures, keyed diagram layouts, and cloud-and-flame line texture.
