The baronial and ecclesiastical antiquities of Scotland
A four-volume survey of Scottish castles, abbeys and cathedrals drawn by Robert William Billings with text by John Hill Burton, reissued in Edinburgh by Oliver and Boyd in 1901 for antiquarians, architects and builders. Steel-engraved plates give tonal exterior views of towers, ruined walls and crow-stepped gables under open skies, plus close studies of vaulting, corbels, doorways and carved detail that supply architectural ornament, masonry texture and silhouette.
