The bases of design
Walter Crane's lectures to art students at the Manchester Municipal School of Art, published in London by G. Bell and Sons in 1902 as a survey of how ornament grows out of building, material and use. The 235 plates mix Crane's own pen redrawings of Egyptian palmette panels, Persian and Indian figure medallions and Greek borders with halftone photographs of painted ceilings and vaults, giving designers clean black-line motifs and whole decorative schemes shown in place.
