Bear and forbear, or, The young skipper of Lake Ucayga
A juvenile adventure novel by Oliver Optic (William Taylor Adams), published in Boston by Lee and Shepard in 1870 for young readers, illustrated by Reimunt Sayer and engraved on wood by Samuel S. Kilburn. The ten plates show lake boating and peril — a sloop heeling under a full sail, a burning steamboat seen past a rower's shoulder, a bear lunging at fleeing boys, rain slanting over rock ledges — with close hatching for water, smoke and foliage that reads well enlarged or cut into silhouettes.
