Behind the scenes in Washington
An 1873 exposé of Washington politics and government departments by James Dabney McCabe, issued by subscription publishers in New York for a general American readership. The wood engravings are exterior views of federal buildings — the General Post Office, the Bureau of Agriculture, small porticoed houses — drawn in level three-quarter perspective with ruled window grids, scattered carriages and pedestrians, and loosely hatched trees and sky; useful for period architectural elevations and street-level figure groups.
