Biography of William Symington, civil engineer; inventor of steam locomotion by sea and land. Also, a brief history of steam navigation..
A biography of the Scottish engineer William Symington with a short history of steam navigation, written by J. and W. H. Rankine and printed at Falkirk by A. Johnston in 1862 for engineers and local readers. The plates are outlined engraved side elevations of paddle steamers and a road steam carriage, showing hulls in section with lettered beams, cranks and flywheels, tall funnels trailing stippled smoke, and rigging drawn as fine single lines — usable as clean technical linework, machinery diagrams, or profile silhouettes.
