The biography and typography of William Caxton, England's first printer
William Blades's 1882 study of William Caxton, issued in New York by Scribner and Welford for printers, bibliographers and collectors of early English books. The plates reproduce Caxton's woodcut initials, printer's marks, borders and type specimens in heavy black line: leaf-filled letters, animal friezes, triangular flower tailpieces and blackletter monograms usable as drop caps and ornament.
