The biography and typography of William Caxton : England's first printer
A bibliographical study of England's first printer by William Blades, himself a London printer, published by Trübner in 1877 for collectors, typographers and antiquarian scholars. Its wood-engravings reproduce fifteenth-century printers' material: inverted triangular tailpieces filled with scrolling acanthus and flowers, heavy white-line initials built from leaves, and small figure scenes set into ornament, all usable as black-and-white spot decoration and drop caps.
