A Dutch multi-volume geography and ethnography compendium, De Aardbol, compiled by Pieter Harme Witkamp from 1839 onward for general readers at home who wanted plates and maps of foreign places. The pictures are small wood-engraved topographical views set in ruled or ornamental rectangular frames, showing German and Bohemian towns, abbeys and hilltop ruins seen across valleys, with foreground travellers, riders, cattle and framing trees; useful for vignette landscapes, decorative border rules and figure staffage.
