A popular history of Anglo-Saxon England's notable figures, written by W. H. Davenport Adams with plates by F. Barnard and issued by W. P. Nimmo in 1870 for general and younger readers. Alongside narrative wood-engraved scenes, the volume repeats a stock tailpiece ornament: a frontal woman's head in a rayed diadem set in a stippled, arrow-shaped cartouche with acanthus scrolls, useful as a section break, colophon mark, or badge silhouette.
