The Adventures of a Post Captain. By a Naval Officer. [In verse.] With ... engravings, by Mr. Williams

WILLIAMS, Samuel - Wood Engraver · 1817 · J. Johnston · 24 pictures

A comic verse narrative of a naval officer's misadventures, published anonymously "By a Naval Officer" in London by J. Johnston in 1817, with plates engraved by Mr. Williams for a general readership of caricature buyers. The hand-coloured etchings set small casts of figures in blue-and-white naval uniform, top hats and bonnets against churches, shopfronts and plain parlours, each captioned with two rhyming couplets: useful for period dress, crowd groupings, exaggerated gesture and caption-under-image layouts.
