The Vicar of Wakefield ... Illustrated with numerous engravings. With an account of the author's life and writings by J. Aikin
An 1850 New York reprint of Oliver Goldsmith's 1766 novel The Vicar of Wakefield, with a life of the author by the physician and writer John Aikin, issued for general household readers. The wood-engraved vignettes sit unframed in the text, drawn in loose hatched line: clusters of figures in eighteenth-century dress talking in lanes, parlours and doorways, with bare trees, longcase clocks and cooking pots as props, useful as small spot illustrations and crowd groupings.
