Guy Fawkes; or the Gunpowder treason, etc
William Harrison Ainsworth's historical novel of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, illustrated by George Cruikshank and issued in London by G. Routledge & Co. in 1857 for a general Victorian reading public. The etchings stage Jacobean conspirators in cloaks, ruffs and steeple-crowned hats inside arched vaults, panelled chambers and curtained rooms, lit by a single lantern or candle so that figures read as silhouettes against dense cross-hatched shadow — useful for period costume, dramatic interior lighting and crowd groupings.
