A five-volume general history of the Netherlands begun by Johannes Pieter Arend in 1840 and continued by Otto van Rees, W. G. Brill and Johan van Vloten, written for Dutch readers as a national narrative from earliest times onward. The plates are steel-engraved oval bust portraits of seventeenth-century nobles and officers in lace collars and armour, each set above a stone plinth bearing an engraved name and a crested coat of arms, giving designers ready-made portrait frames, heraldic cartouches and captioned pedestal blocks.
