A five-volume general history of the Netherlands begun by Johannes Pieter Arend in 1840 and continued by Otto van Rees, W. G. Brill and Johan van Vloten, issued in Dutch for a broad reading public. The plates are engraved oval bust portraits of rulers, governors and officials, each set on a tinted panel above a small heraldic achievement and split name caption, giving designers ready-made portrait medallions, crest and helmet devices, and a repeatable frame-plus-plinth layout.
