A multi-volume general history of the Netherlands begun by Johannes Pieter Arend in 1840 and continued by Otto van Rees, W. G. Brill and Johan van Vloten, issued in Dutch for a general national readership. The plates are steel-engraved bust portraits of seventeenth-century regents and diplomats set in ovals above a stone plinth bearing lettered names, offices and painted coats of arms, giving designers ready-made portrait frames, heraldic cartouches with helm and mantling, and engraved capital lettering.
