A Dutch general history of the Netherlands from earliest times to the present, begun by Johannes Pieter Arend in 1840 and continued by Otto van Rees, W. G. Brill and Johan van Vloten, issued in five parts for educated Dutch readers. The plates are lithographed oval bust portraits of seventeenth-century kings and commanders in armour, wigs and lace cravats, set above stone plinths carrying engraved heraldic shields, mottoes and spaced capital captions, useful for portrait medallions, framing devices and coats of arms.
