A five-volume general history of the Netherlands begun by Johannes Pieter Arend in 1840 and continued by Otto van Rees, W. G. Brill and Johan van Vloten, issued in Dutch for a general reading public. The plates are steel-engraved oval bust portraits of counts, dukes and nobles printed in grey-violet tint, each set above a stone plinth carrying the sitter's name and an engraved coat of arms, giving designers ready-made framing devices, crowns, fur-trimmed robes and small heraldic shields.
