A multi-volume general history of the Netherlands begun by Johannes Pieter Arend in 1840 and continued by Otto van Rees, W. G. Brill and Johan van Vloten, issued for Dutch readers of national history. The plates are stipple-and-line engraved oval bust portraits of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century statesmen and theologians in ruffs and dark gowns, each set above an engraved stone plinth carrying a lettered name and a scrolled cartouche with arms, giving designers reusable oval frames, blank plinth panels and heraldic shield ornaments.
