A Century of Ballads ... Edited, and illustrated in facsimile of the originals, by J. Ashton
John Ashton's 1887 anthology for Elliot Stock reprints a hundred English broadside ballads with facsimile copies of their original seventeenth-century woodcuts, aimed at Victorian antiquaries and collectors. The cuts are small, black-line figures in ruled boxes: courting couples, riders with swords, standing men and women in period dress, set against sparse grass, flowers and hatched skies, useful as spot illustrations and borders.
