The Fleet: its river, prison, and marriages ... Illustrated, etc
An antiquarian history of London's Fleet river, the Fleet Prison and the clandestine marriages performed there, written by John Ashton and published by T. Fisher Unwin in London in 1888 for readers of local history. The line illustrations, many copied from earlier prints, show prison yards crowded with small figures, brick walls and gatehouses, canal banks and riverside buildings, drawn in thin uninflected outline with sparse hatching, useful as spot vignettes, architectural silhouettes and crowd groupings.
